I have decided to publish the `Frossieland` blog now, even though I have been writing `The Frossieland Diary` for a number of years. `Frossieland` is a ficticious place I have conjured up to distinguish people I know that consitute a particular mindset.
The idea stemmed from my observations of my French friends that were living and working in Australia. Those observations convinced me of how cross cultural experiences can benefit us in terms of human growth potential- the mix of cultural traits towards a greater appreciation of people other than ones own; a transcendance of national characteristics that can sometimes bind or categorise us too simply, especially in this increasingly globalised world.
I had also observed many ex-pat children and the relative openess and positivity they seem to have for life and the world at large. So I liked the idea of promoting this attitude and indeed am a devout `Frossie` myself, being from a mixed cultural background; and having lived and worked in such far flung places, as Asia, Australia, USA and Caribbean.
So Frossieland is not a place, but a direction or attitude, if you like. It seems to make perfect sense in a world that is becoming more digital than geographic. However there are many seeming barriers to full use of the `Frossieland Passport`. Firstly, it seems that in this new world, we have every means (in the industrialised world anyway) to go where we want and work where we want, but we seem to be increasingly more fearful of doing just that. Governments everywhere are making it harder to cross borders and immigration policies everywhere are being overhauled. I found out the other day that the Australian Government has increased its naturalisation period from 3 to 5 years. Presumably we are trying to protect ourselves from people that would be disgruntled by lengthy queues and approval processes; which just about applies to everyone, without time on their hands.
Anyway, the main thing is to persevere despite all this stupid, irrational negativity and by sharing some of my writings and adventures, I hope to show that benefit of such cultural risks and collaborations outweigh the risks.
And who knows where we might end up? A new country, a new flag and anthem, a passport..hmmm wait a minute...sounds like more queues, visas, bureaucracy, nationalism....ah ok, lets forget that and just keep it on-line,but i like the idea of an anthem!
Here`s to Frossieland- not a place, but a direction.
